DON'T SHOOT!!!

Tuesday 1.4.05

9:15pm:
Frank calls to tell me he is leaving work and to give him a half an hour head start and head over to pick up my receipt for my alarm.
9:36pm: As I am about to leave my house to head over Frank’s, my cell rings, It is E* Great! It’s my first opportunity to talk with her on the phone. We chat; I hop in the car, get gas, and proceed on to Frank’s house. As I get close, The cell phone loses reception (thanks AT&T/ Cingular or whatever you are calling yourself these days) I pass by Franks house in an effort to regain signal.
9:48pm: The beautiful E* calls me back, and I find a spot right off the main road to pull over and talk with out risking losing reception again. 12 minutes later, Another cell phone problem… this time it’s E* (Thanks Verizon)
10:01pm: I call her back, talk for 10 more minutes.
10:10pm: A Police officer pulls up next to me
10:11pm: A second police officer pulls up nose to nose with my truck. And the first officer walks up to my window and asks me what I’m doing, I politely tell him I was talking on the phone and to leave me alone. (OK, So I didn’t say the last part) anyway… I give him my license, then my registration and insurance card. He explains they had a call about a suspicious vehicle in the area. An tell him I was on the to see a friend a block away and there was no cell phone reception there, so I found a place to park to finish my call, because it is would have been illegal drive while talking on the cell phone in NJ. (OK, I didn’t tell hem that last part either)
10:13pm The second officer is out of the car walking around my truck looking in all my windows with the flashlight, and three additional Police cars pull up (and stay in their cars). Meanwhile, I roll down the passengers side window to accommodate the officers search, End the call with E*, and the officer begins to ask me what cell service I have, and tells me everything will be alright, provided I don’t have any outstanding ‘seatbelt tickets’. WTF – I didn’t think talking on the cell phone in a parked car with the parking lights on was breaking the law and warranted 5 police cars.
10:20: I was told everything checked out OK (No kidding!) and I was free to go. And that WAWA would be a better place to talk on the phone in the future. Gee, thanks. Next time I don’t get good reception I’ll go look for a WAWA. I may even use the pay phone…
10:25: stop at Franks, get the receipt, head home.
10:42: Safely in bed. What a night, what an interesting first phone call.
